Opening Academic Year - 4 September 2017 - Science as the basis for optimism
The opening of the Academic Year of Wageningen University & Research will take place on Monday 4 September 2017 on Wageningen Campus. The theme is 'Science as the basis for optimism'.
In an age where dark clouds gather, one of the few consistent sources of optimism is science, as the past century demonstrates. However, science is increasingly subject to scrutiny in a world that values fact-free policy making and where citizens believe their own experiences more than experiment-based statistics. For science to remain the basis for optimism, it needs to find new ways to interact with society. Exploring these new ways is the theme of the opening ceremony of the Academic Year 2017-2018. The British author and member of the House of Lords, Matt Ridley, will elaborate on the subject in his keynote and three Wageningen scientists will reflect on the address.
On behalf of the Executive Board Wageningen University & Research, you are cordially invited you to join the celebration of the Opening of the Academic Year, and they hope to welcome you on the 4th of September.
